Welcome back to the Devilinspired Official Blog!

The topic of today's article is the corset in Lolita fashion. And I will divide this blog into five parts as follows:

1. What is the corset?

Corsets are also known as girdles, stays, bodices, or foundation garments.

A corset is a stiff piece of underwear worn especially in the past. It fits tightly around the wearer's hips and waist and makes them thinner around the waist when they wear it. Except to shape a smaller waist or larger bottom, it can also be used to support the breasts 0f the wearers. In a word, the corset is a support garment commonly worn to hold and train the torso into a desired shape.

The corset is a common accessory in Lolita clothing. It can both optimize the figure of the wearer and decorate the Lolita dresses.

2. Pro-Corset V.S. Modern Corset

Pro-corset was so tight that wearers usually felt uncomfortable and then had chronic health problems like constipation and indigestion.

Originally, it was known as "a pair of bodies" in the late 16th century. It was a simple bodice, stiffened with boning of reed or whalebone. A busk made of wood, horn, whalebone, metal, or ivory further reinforced the central front. It was most often laced in the back, and was, at first, a garment reserved for the aristocracy. Later, the term "pair of bodies" would be replaced with the term "stays" and was generally used during the 17th and 18th centuries. Stays essentially turned the upper torso into a cone or cylinder shape. In the 17th century, tabs (called "fingers") at the waist were added.

While modern corsets are kind of healthy corsets. It is more durable, flexible, and stretchy. What’s more, the wearers can wear the corsets and do daily business more conveniently.

Nowadays, the garment market is full of exquisite and comfortable corsets. They are made of different types of materials with different colors and in different sizes.

3. How to Choose the Right Corset?

3.1 Choose the shape you want

1)Overbust

2)Underbust

3)Waist trainer

3.2 Select the material of your corset

The good or bad material used in the girdle product has an important influence on the comfort, line feeling, and corset effect of the final product. So, it is of great significance to choose the suitable material for Lolita corsets.

In Lolita fashion, there are seven common fabrics for the girdles.

1) Spandex

It is a synthetic fiber known for its exceptional elasticity.

2)Polyester

It, on the other hand, is a synthetic fiber that doesn't breathe well, repels water, and isn't sustainable.

3)Leather

It is a strong, flexible, and durable material obtained from the tanning, or chemical treatment, of animal skins and hides to prevent decay.

4)Cotton

It is most often spun into yarn or thread and used to make a soft, breathable, and durable textile.

5)Coarse Linen / Slub

It is a lump or thick place in wool or thread.

6)Denim

Denim is a sturdy cotton warp-faced textile in which the weft passes under two or more warp threads.

7)Satin

Satin is a type of cloth with a smooth shiny surface.

5 How to Take Care of Your Corset

1)Alternate between corsets.

Wearing one corset every day can place a lot of stress on it leading to faster deterioration of materials or even damage to the boning. Try to alternate between at least two corsets to avoid putting too much stress on a single one.

2)Dry-clean your corset.

Corsets should never be machine washed. To extend their life they should only ever be spot-cleaned or dry-cleaned.

3)Hang up your corsets when you're not wearing them

Corsets should be hung loosely in a closet or over the back of a chair after they are worn to let them air out.

Hope it helped!
