Popular Sanrio Characters
Hello Kitty (ハローキティ, Harō Kitī), also known by her full name, Kitty White, is a fictional character produced by the Japanese company Sanrio, created by Yuko Shimizu, and designed by Yuko Yamaguchi. She is portrayed as a female white Japanese Bobtail Cat with a red bow worn on her left ear and often wears blue overalls with a yellow shirt on top.
The character's first appearance on an item, a vinyl coin purse, in Japan on November 1st, 1974. She sat between a bottle of milk and a pet goldfish and had turned her head sideways to face her newfound friends. In a word: cute. Or more accurately, kawaii, the distinctively Japanese breed of cuteness that injects adorable attributes into all aspects of the country's consumer culture. Registered in 1975, Hello Kitty is now a globally known trademark.
Hello Kitty is not normally given a mouth because "without the mouth, it is easier for the person looking at Hello Kitty to project their feelings onto her blank stare" and that "the person can be happy or sad together with Hello Kitty." A handful of feminist scholars say her non-communicative nature comes from the submissive female archetype.
Hello Kitty isn't Japanese. She was born in the suburbs of London, England on November 1st. She is a cute, bright, sweet, kind-hearted, and tomboyishly beautiful girl. Her height is described as five apples and her weight as three apples. She is good at baking cookies and loves Mama's homemade apple pie. She likes to collect cute things. Her blood type is A. Her trademark signature is a red bow on her left ear.
My Melody (マイメロディ, Mai Merodī), frequently known for short as My Melo (マイメロ Mai Mero), Hello Kitty's best friend, is a white rabbit from Sanrio. When she debuted, she was portraying Little Red Riding Hood in her version of the classic fairy tale. That is why she wears a red (or pink) hood that covers her ears, often having a bow or a flower on her right side.
She is a very honest, good-natured girl. Her favorite food is almond pound cake. She was born on January 18th in the magical forest of Mariland located in London, the home to many of her friends. Although she is often pictured with Kuromi as friends, they are rivals.
Little Twin Stars
Little Twin Stars (リトルツインスターズ, Ritoru Tsuin Sutāzu) is a pair of characters made by Sanrio. The little brother is called Kiki while the elder sister is called Lala. Kiki has blue hair, while Lala has pink hair (sometimes, Kiki's hair is brown, while Lala's hair is blonde). Both have a birthday on December 24 (Christmas Eve) on Omoiyari Star in the Dream Star-Cloud. To learn how to be the best, shiniest stars they could be, they traveled a long way to Earth. They were introduced in 1975 and enjoyed popularity in the early 1980s.
Kiki (キキ, Kiki), the younger brother, has short blue (or sometimes brown) hair. He loves star-fishing and inventing things. His curiosity about everything can make him a little cheeky sometimes. He wears a long-sleeve white gown and has bare feet.
Lala (ララ, Rara), the older sister, has long pink (or sometimes blonde) hair. She can be a little timid, and she loves drawing, writing poems, and cooking! Like Kiki, she wears a long sleeve white gown and has bare feet.
As siblings, Kiki and Lala are really close and always play together. Kiki looks out for his older sister Lala and also thinks it's his job to protect her. Since Kiki is very curious, he can sometimes put himself in a dangerous situation which makes Lala worry about him. Even when the two rarely had arguments, the twins manage to get back together fairly quickly.
Keroppi (けろけろけろっぴ, Kerokerokeroppi) is a fictional character created by Sanrio in 1988. He is a frog with big eyes and a V-shaped mouth. He lives in Donut Pond.
Keroppi's family name is Hasunoue, which means "on lotus" in Japanese. The name "Kerokerokeroppi" is a two-layered pun: it directly translates from Japanese to English as "morning glory," but "kero" means "ribbit" as well. He enjoys swimming, baseball, playing with boomerangs, and singing.
Pochacco (ポチャッコ, Pochakko) is one of the many fictional characters produced by Sanrio in 1989. He is drawn as a white dog with black floppy ears, but no visible mouth. He is often dressed in athletic attire, as he has a sporty and playful personality.
Pochacco loves basketball and soccer, but around the mid-1990s he took up skateboarding. Although Pochacco walks upright, he still has a hard time and trips often, usually resulting in head injuries, and is sometimes seen with an accumulation of bandages.
Pompompurin(or Pudding Dog)
Pompompurin (ポムポムプリン, Pomupomupurin) is a good-natured Golden Retriever dog character introduced by Sanrio in 1996. Pudding dog was born on a sunny day on April 16th. His trademark is his brown beret that is always on top of his head.
Pompompurin lives in his own basket in the entrance hall of his sister's owner's house. Pompompurin's interest is collecting shoes, which includes his owner father's leather shoes, one of his owner mother's sandals, etc. He likes to hide them. Pompompurin loves drinking milk and eating cream caramel pudding that his mother makes. He also spends a lot of time sleeping, doing 'purin aerobics,' and hanging out with his best friends. He's a laidback dog who loves soft stuff and easily makes friends. He dreams of being even bigger. He perks up when he hears his owners say "Let's go out!" and he'd rather not hear "Stay!"
Cinnamoroll (シナモロール, Shinamorōru) is a Sanrio character who was born on March 6, 2001, on a cloud far up in the sky. For the first year as a rabbit, he was named Cinnamon, but to remedy any problems with the registration of the trademark overseas, as of 2007, his official name became Cinnamoroll.
He is a little chubby male dog with white fur, blue eyes, pink cheeks, a plump and curly tail that resembles a cinnamon roll, and long ears that enable him to fly.
Kuromi (クロミ, Kuromi) is My Melody's rival, who is a white rabbit or imp-like creature wearing a black jester's hat with a pink skull on the front and a black devil's tail. The skull's facial expression changes to match Kuromi's mood. Fittingly, her birthday is Halloween (October 31st). Her name translates from Japanese to English as "chrome."
Kuromi's appearance is also similar to those of cartoon characters from the 1990s such as Pichu from Pokémon. Kuromi has become a popular character for the punk, scene, and goth crowds due to her appearance.
Kuromi is a tomboy, but behind her tough appearance, she is very girly. She enjoys writing in her diary and reading romance novels.
